Lakes, seas and watercourses exposed to an excessive amount of nitrogen and phosphorus can be affected by eutrophication. Plant nutrient losses from agricultural land to water are a major contributor to eutrophication. Different measures are used in Sweden to reduce plant nutrient losses from agricultural land. The work is based on EU directives, international commitments and the environmental quality objectives adopted by Sweden.
This brochure gives an introduction to the legislation, financial instruments and extension services aiming at reducing plant nutrient losses from agriculture. You can also read about results from actions taken to reduce plant nutrient losses, and about effects seen in the environment.
